UV-Responsive Smart Chemical Fiber Fabric for Adaptive Sun Protection

Tokyo, Japan - July 2025: Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo have developed a UV-responsive smart chemical fiber fabric that automatically adjusts its sun protection factor (SPF) based on UV radiation intensity, offering adaptive protection for outdoor activities. The fabric incorporates UV-sensitive photochromic molecules into polyester fibers, enabling dynamic changes in fiber structure in response to UV exposure.

UV-Responsive Smart Chemical Fiber Fabric for Adaptive Sun Protection

Traditional sun protection fabrics have a fixed SPF, providing either insufficient protection in strong UV conditions or reduced breathability in low UV environments. The UV-responsive smart fabric addresses this issue by using photochromic molecules that change conformation when exposed to UV radiation (wavelength 280-400 nm). This conformational change causes the fiber structure to become more compact, increasing the fabric's SPF from 30 (in low UV conditions) to 50+ (in strong UV conditions) within 30 seconds.
When UV radiation decreases, the photochromic molecules revert to their original conformation, and the fiber structure relaxes, restoring the fabric's breathability. The fabric maintains its adaptive sun protection properties after 30 wash cycles and exhibits excellent durability. It is also lightweight and comfortable, making it suitable for outdoor clothing, sportswear, and children's apparel.
The research team has filed several patents for the UV-responsive technology and is collaborating with Japanese textile brands to commercialize the fabric. The smart fabric is expected to gain significant market traction as consumers increasingly demand functional and adaptive textile products that balance protection and comfort. It also aligns with global efforts to promote sun safety and reduce the risk of skin cancer associated with UV exposure.
